Understanding zipper anatomy helps explain why repairs are so effective. A zipper consists of the tape (fabric strip), teeth (metal or plastic interlocking elements), slider (the pull piece that opens and closes), and stops (top and bottom end pieces). In most cases, zipper failure is caused by a worn slider — the metal slider body widens over time and can no longer close the teeth tightly. Replacing just the slider (a $15-$25 repair) restores full function without replacing the entire zipper assembly.
